The 4-day Classic Inca Trail Trek to Machu Picchu from Cusco is undoubtedly an impressive way to visit Machu Picchu. The Classic Inca Trail Trek takes you through the protected nature of the Peruvian jungle and cloud forests, passing through several Inca archaeological sites and offering stunning views. The Incas used this sacred path for their pilgrimage to the sacred city of Machu Picchu.
The best thing about the Classic Inca Trail Trek is that it’s the only way to witness the sunrise from Intipunku or Sungate before stepping into Machu Picchu.
Itinerary
Day 1Cusco - Km82 - Wayllabamba - Yuncachimpa
We will leave from Cusco at 05:30 in the morning towards the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Before reaching the trailhead at Km. 82, we will stop in Ollantaytambo for breakfast.
After having breakfast, we will take a train to the trailhead, Km 82. Once here, the authorities will verify your permit and passport details before allowing you access.
We will cross the Urubamba River and start our Classic Inca Trail Trek. This would be more like a warm-up. We will stop in a town called Miskay for lunch.
After the explanation, we will continue with our hike to Wayllabamba (3,100 m) and then up to Yuncachimpa (3,300 m), where we will camp and spend the night. From this place, we will have a beautiful view of the mysterious Veronica mountain.
Walking time: 6-7 hours
Total distance: Approximately 11 km.
Day 2Yuncachimpa – Llulluchapampa – Warmihuañusca – Pacamayu – Runkurakay – Chaquicocha
The second day is a day to walk freely, which means that everyone can walk at their own pace. During the short breaks, you will meet the other members of your group, so you won’t feel alone when walking at your own pace.
Early in the morning, the road takes us first to the valley of Llulluchapampa (3850 m). In the first 3 kilometers, we will enjoy the humid forests and the sound of the small rivers. After three hours of walking from Llulluchapampa, we will reach the highest point of the trip, Warmihuañusca Abra (Dead Woman’s Pass) (4200 m). This ascent is known as the most difficult part of the Inca Trail.
After a short break at the summit, we will continue the journey with a long and steep descent towards the Pacaymayo River to the Runkurakay pass (3050 m), where we will arrive at our camp called Chaquicocha at (3650 m). Here we will end the day with a well-deserved rest while enjoying an impressive view of the mountains and the landscape.
Walking time: 8-9 hours Total distance: Approximately 15 km
Day 3Chaquicocha - Phuyupatamarca - Wiñay Wayna
The third day is the most beautiful. You may notice a change in the ecosystem when walking to the Wiñay Wayna tropical forest. We will pass two small lakes at the top of the second pass (3950 m). It is a gentle ascent through a beautiful cloud forest and a small Inca tunnel before arriving at the third pass (3700 m) from where you have a magnificent view of the Valley and Urubamba River. The nearest archaeological center is called Phuyupatamarca, “the City among the clouds” (3600 m). A well-preserved Inca site, where you can enjoy impressive ancient engineering. We will pass another Inca tunnel before visiting the “always young” Wiñay Wayna ruins (2650 m). The stone stairs are transformed into a zigzag path until we reach our last camp.
Walking time: 5-6 hours Total distance: Approximately 10 km
Day 4Wiñay Wayna - Machu Picchu - Cusco
After breakfast at 4:30 in the morning, we will go – equipped with our flashlights – to Inti Punku (Sun Gate) to have the first view of Machu Picchu and watch the sunrise over Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu. The last triumphant descent will take us almost an hour before we visit the citadel of Machu Picchu (2400 m) around 08 a.m. You can enjoy its spiritual charm during a guided tour (about two hours) that helps you understand the meaning and ancient use of the different buildings.
After this tour, you will have enough time to explore the archaeological site on your own (for example, visit the Inca Bridge, explore the variety of buildings, or climb Wayna Picchu for an incredible panoramic image). Then when we return, we will take a bus to Machu Picchu Town (Aguas Calientes). Here you can relax in the hot springs of the city.
Continuing the trip, we will take a train in the afternoon that will take us to the Ollantaytambo station (a 2-hour trip). At the place, we will be waiting for our transfer with a sign indicating our names to return on a tourist bus to the City of Cusco.
Walking time: 2-3 hours Total distance: Approximately 7 km.
