Itinerary

Tour Maras Moray and Salt Mines

Maras.- Located west of Cusco at 3300 m.a.s.l. from there you can see the Urubamba mountain range and the snowy peaks of “La Verónica” (5682 meters above sea level) and the “Chikón” (5530 meters above sea level). Its important occupation began when the noble inhabitants of the Incario were stripped of their palaces in the Qosqo and had than going out to settle in other small towns like Maras.

Moray.- The archaeological circuit of Moray is unique in its kind. These are depressions or gigantic natural holes in the surface of the land that were used to build terraces or agricultural platforms with their respective irrigation channels. What attracts attention is the temperature difference in each terrace level that generates microclimates, such as a higher temperature, gradually reducing towards the outside at a lower temperature and can differentiate up to 20 different climates.

Tour Maras Moray and Salt Mines

Moray was the greenhouse and the field of experimentation in agriculture of the Incas. These differences in height, in which the platforms are located, created changes in temperature and humidity that, according to archaeologists, generated up to 20 different life zones. In them, the Incas could domesticate wild plants and grow species that, naturally, do not grow in Cusco.

Salt Mines.- Then we will go to the Salineras located 7 km from Moray,  where the famous salt mines known by some as “salt mines” are made up of some 3000 small wells, which during the dry season are filled or “irrigated” every 3 days with salt water emanating from a natural spring located in the upper part of the wells so that when the water evaporates, the salt contained in it will gradually solidify. This process will continue for approximately one month until a considerable volume of solid salt is obtained.
